Company description
''From these walls and from these grounds, we were sent out not so much to subdue the world as to exalt it; to leave it a better place than we found it.” These wise words quite eloquently capture the fascinating history of J.C.Chandisingh Secondary School. Formerly Corentyne High School, J.C.Chandisingh Secondary School was established in 1983 by a legendary and visionary individual: Joseph Chamberlain Chandisingh. The school was housed in a modest two storied building on a small plot of land donated by Bookers Sugar Limited. This school mainly catered for youths of the predominantly agrarian Corentyne Coast who had little chance to access the education provided by the British. It served as a launching point for them to further their studies as that they could proceed to
Along with Mr. Chandisingh, other noteworthy individuals helped mold selflessly the walls and fruits of this institution: Rev. A.E. Dyett (Minister of Auchlyene), A.L.Swamber (Chemist and Druggist), Edna K.Goodwill (Art teacher).
From its inception up to 1959, the school accommodated eleven forms with an enrollment of over 400 students. In 1959 after the British gave recognition to the sterling performances of the school, a new building was erected obliquely opposite to accommodate sixteen classrooms and three science laboratories. Additionally, Bookers Sugar Estates generously donated the old Albion Estate Hospital to be used for the construction of the new school’s auditorium. Other facilities included a cricket field, volleyball court, and facilities for other sports.
The new school became operational in January 1960. The curricula were revamped so as to present the changing demands of the world. Physics, Chemistry and Biology were introduced as well as Spanish.
In 1976, the government took over leadership of the school. From then to present the school has boasted many noteworthy headteachers: J.P.Deonarine, Janet Walrond, Frank McKenzie, Claude Johnson, Dwarka Shivraj, Bhagmattie LaCruz, Naiome Lashley , Barbara Hamilton and current Head Shaundelle Bourne.
Academically, the school has made history by producing scholars such as doctors, lawyers, politicians among many other noteworthy professionals. Excellence academically and through discipline as always has been the focus of this noble institution. Thanks to the vision of a few individuals, the school has fulfilled its motto ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’, Through Hardwork To The Stars.
